Callaway Golf uPro Golf GPS

Rating: ★★★★½
The Callaway Golf uPro Golf GPS uses innovative GPS, satellite, and aerial technology to display thousands of mapped golf courses in startling detail. In design, the uPro Golf GPS is eye-catching, yet because of its inconspicuous size, it can easily fit into a belt clip or in a pocket.

The 2.2 inch high color screen allows users to see above ground photographs of the course and each individual hole. These aerial and satellite pictures permit the golfer to see different views of the fairway and lets him assess the proximity of nearby sand traps and hazards. When downloading courses, individuals have a choice of a Basic or Pro Mode with a pay for what you need plan. The Basic course reveals the distance to all hazards in a green view while the Pro mode offers additional features, most notably an aerial view of the entire hole.

Along with a rapid GPS locking system, the unit has one of the fastest launching times of all the golf GPS devices.  For those who want to further increase the convenience of the uPro, there is an available download which enables the unit to respond to vocal instructions and makes course plotting of the instrument even more stress free. The uPro comes with a six month warranty and includes one free course download, a rechargeable battery, a USB cable, and a wall adapter.

What users say:
The cost of the uPro is expensive, over $300.00, and the fact that there is no flat subscription fee seems like a rip-off (though some golfers enjoy only paying for what they need). Not all of the requested courses are available for download, and the syncing of downloads is quite slow.

On more positive notes, the distance measurements are highly accurate. The uPro offers the mark features which permits you to view the length of your shots. The satellite and aerial technology are awesome; in uPro mode, every tree and hazard are shown, making the sport of golf easier than ever.

Callaway Golf uPro Go GPS

Rating: ★★★½☆

Easily able to fit in a pocket, the Callaway Golf uPro Go GPS is a colorized GPS unit with a high resolution LCD screen. The uPro Go is powered by a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery and can last for 10 to 12 hours. It has a six month limited warranty, and it comes with 18,000 preloaded golf courses from the U.S. and Canada. Each course is efficiently mapped by Callaway employees.

The uPro Go comes with two modes of operation, the Basic mode which is included at purchase, and the Go Mode that requires a one-time activation fee. Hazard and Green outlook screens are featured in the basic mode. Hazard view identifies the distance to avoid each hazard, while the Green screen reveals the amount of space to the front, center, and back of the green. The Basic mode also includes the mark feature which allows the user to calculate shot distances.

Requiring a one time activation fee, the Go Mode offers a Virtual Green view as well as an Any Point view. The Virtual Green display uses an innovative imagery process to provide a colored, comprehensive sketch of each golf course that updates as you advance across the green. In Any Point view, a laser works along with the GPS to accurately measure any area on or near the green.

One of the advantages associated with using the uPro Go GPS is that all of the courses are already downloaded to the unit. The uPro Go is also compact in size. Despite its size, it is sturdy and will remain locked even when stored inside of a golfer’s pocket. Another popular feature is the unique display which uses sunlight and clouds to illuminate the screen.

Users cited few disadvantages with the uPro Go GPS.  The main difficulty associated with the uPro Go is navigation. The joystick, especially, is difficult to use. Other complaints involve the amount of time it takes for the software to load and the unavailability of specific courses. Golfers do not seem to have a problem with the $249.00 price tag.
